It’s been nearly a year since the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke and the future of Project Runway was up in the air. That’s because the show was being produced by The Weinstein Company whose contract was voided by A&E Networks, the parent company of Lifetime, where the show aired because Harvey Weinstein failed to inform them of litigation both he and his company were involved in. They also believed he was using the show to get to young girls.
Well all of that drama is over and the show is headed back to Bravo, its original network prior to the Weinstein Company’s involvement. There will be a 90 minute season 17 premiere on March 14th but with some notable changes. One such change will be the new hosts. Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn are out as hosts. They’ll be hosting a new show of their own on Amazon Prime. The other is the fact that the show will be having its first trans model.
“We have full-figured models, we have African-American models, we have our first transgender model in ‘Project Runway’ this season,” judge Nina Garcia told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday.
They have had multiple trans contestants including Ari South who even transitioned in between her first two appearances on the show. In a time we have the first Playboy Playmate, Ines Rau and trans model Angela Ponce being crowned Miss Spain, this seems to be a natural progression for the show.
The judges’ panel is going to be full of celebrities from Cardi B to hip hop fashion icon Dapper Dan, Kendall Jenner’s stylist Marni Senofonte who’s also responsible for Beyonce’s Lemonade and SuperBowl 50 looks and more.
