The debate about the greatness of Nicki Minaj is officially settled with her being the biggest thing since Lil Kim. So the fact that she could be overlooked by a heavyhitting label like Def Jam is almost hard to fathom. But that’s what happened according to rapper Randy Nichols aka Ransom, according to a new interview of his on the Rap Radar podcast. He says in 2009 “We went to Def Jam, like, ‘Yo, you should probably sign her, too.’ She probably don’t know that. I ain’t gonna tell you the person even we talked to. You guys know him. He was like, ‘Nah, that shit will never work.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’ Nah, I see him to this day I be like, ‘Wow!’ I looked at him like, ‘Alright.’”
He then spoke about executives who essentially don’t know their head from their a** regarding spotting talent saying, “There’s a lot of people in this industry that has no idea what the fuck they doing. If you know what you doing and you stick around long enough, you’ll make a name for yourself.” Nicki herself even rapped about this in 2009 on Beam Me Up Scotty‘s Can Anybody Hear Me? Def Jam said I’m no Lauryn Hill/ Can’t rap and sing on the same CD/ The public won’t get it, they got A.D.D.” Of course things worked out for her in the end as she’s amassed 3 Number Ones on the Hot 100 and 5 Grammy noms. She’s even recently picked up a $19 million Hidden HIlls home, something she likely wouldn’t have done if as Def Jam said, the public didn’t get her sound.
And do you know who else didn’t like Nicki? Gucci Mane. His former manager Deb Atney said on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion that he vehemently didn’t like her because he couldn’t sleep with her. He went off in 2013 on Twitter claiming he slept with her saying, “Me and waka fuck nikki minaj dats nothing,” adding “Her intervention my dick in her throat I moved dat bitch to atl. Bitch u was sleepin n d car. Bitch. I pulled dat bitch off wayne bus.” Nicki responded on Twitter saying, “May God strike me dead if I ever had sex wit that man. Lmfaoooooooooo. N#### da way ya #ugliness is set up #BubbaGump #Crackhead.” She added: “He’s fighting so hard for one more ounce of relevance. Tyga and I turned down his feature request last Thursday. He’s sick and in dire need of rehab. I’m praying 4 him. 4real.” It looks like she’s got the last laugh, though. Clearly she’s done fine without him.
