Lizzo recently released her new single Rumors with Cardi B, a vulnerable track about the things she has to deal with from trolls and things people have written about in recent years. It was enough for her to break down crying on Instagram Live with a number of celebs coming to her defense.
Missy Elliott sent her flowers, Cardi B told her “When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive.When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny,big,plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you.Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.” Offset said, “Let these beautiful Black women be great, stop judging,” he said In a statement given to TMZ about the “Rumors” backlash, adding people need to stop with the “negative energy.” He continued, “We work hard to be entertainers for the world. Let us be.”
And Remy Ma is the latest to show Lizzo their support. She recently told a reporter, “F*ck these b*tches. What are you talking about? F*ck them. Don’t care and just keep getting your money. You’ll never see them in real life, ever. They’ll never say it to your face.”
Remy Ma’s advice is important. The things that are said about her will never be said to her face and anyone who has dealt with trolls know this. Missy had her song Gossip Folks back in 2002 where she pointed out how all the people who were trashing her were secret fans. That usually is how that works. Remy Ma did an IG video with a troll and fellow rapper and stopped mid-video saying, “You love me, don’t you?” And he blushed, knowing it’s true. Wendy Osefo snapped on The Real Housewives of Potomac recently about things said about her husband for similar reasons. The cast told her they felt the rumors weren’t true but felt like bringing it up on television knowing full well the consequence these things have on relationships once it’s out there.
Lizzo’s going to be fine. She’s one of the most talented artists we have out now and most confident. She doesn’t have to tone her light down for anyone. And the trolls will continue to be secret fans watching mad.
