Keke Wyatt has made this week’s PopGlitz Sunday Inspiration with a tribute to the Clark Sisters that she did at the 2016 Essence Festival. She sang Douglas Miller’sWhen I See Jesus, Patti LaBelle’sIf Only You Knew and The Clark Sisters’ big hit Is My Living In Vain? Before performing she did an interview with the magazine talking about how much she was looking forward to her tribute saying, “I love them. I grew up on them. Dorinda is my favorite ever in life. I don’t get starstruck, but when I saw her she was on the airplane in first class sitting right across from me. I looked over there and I cheesed so hard my jaws hurt. I was like staring the whole flight. And when we landed she was waiting outside the door to meet me. I was like, ‘What? Girl get out of here!’ She said, ‘I love you.’ I was like, ‘No, ma’am. I love you.’ It was so funny. That’s the first time I ever been dumbfounded. Lord knows I love her. I’m looking forward to that and hopefully hearing them sing.”
She first burst on the scene with her duet she did with Avant, My First Love and she’s been known as a vocal powerhouse since. As a little known fact, she recorded that song at 15. And to think, people far older haven’t been able to keep up with her vocals from when she was a minor. She’s also said Patti Labelle called her a heifer, which is a term she only reserves for those who can not just sing but sang, and told her that she couldn’t even sing that song anymore after hearing her do it. And this wasn’t her first foray into gospel by far. She’s performed for TBN, Sunday’s Best, Gospel Music Honors among others. And she started singing in church since 5. So even though it was her family who encouraged her to do mainstream music, she’s always had those gospel roots.
