Shirley Murdock might be known for her side chick hit, As We Lay in the 80s, popularized by Kelly Price, but she’s been singing gospel since the 2000s. Her first gospel album was Home, which was on TD Jakes‘ record label. Yes, he has a record label. We covered that in out last #ThrowbackThursday where we shared his love songs album from the 90s. And she was actually on that album. Fast forward a few years later and in her first gospel album she released, ‘I Love Me Better Than That,’ which is today’s Sunday Inspiration. She rereleased it as a live version for her 2007 album Soul Food.
The Ohio native might have shocked some by her decision to pursue gospel but she’s spoken about how Shirley Caesar, Andre Crouch and The Clark Sisters were favorite artists of hers since being a child. Now back to the Sunday inspo. The song was the first single on her second gospel album and peaked at Number 22 on the US Gospel Billboard chart. It actually comes across as being very reflective of her hit As We Lay where she’s speaking about walking away from an ungodly situation and vowing to “get my life back.”
