The Weeknd cleared his Instagram last week already letting fans know he was up to something. He had already warned us on July the 8th in a cryptic post that “the dawn is coming.” By the 14th he tweeted “we gettin’ there” with a cd emoji, followed up with “really proud of this one. wow.” And once he deleted all his IG posts, “The Dawn is Coming” began trending on Twitter and now it appears to have come to fruition.
The 31 year old singer whose real name is Abel Tesfaye posted a near 2 minute video titled The Dawn is Coming as an introduction to his new musical era which came after him tweeting “fuck it … IT STARTS TONIGHT.” Mind you he just released an album in March with 3 new songs for a deluxe version “Missed You,” “Nothing Compares,” and “Final Lullaby” recorded later that month. He’s not wasting anytime beefing up his catalog which is quite impressive for someone who just had a Billboard Number 1 debut.
Aside from his new music release, in September he’s set to receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award during the first-ever Music in Action Awards, hosted by the Black Music Action Coalition. The award is reserved for those in the industry that have had significant philanthropic efforts. Last year he gave millions for a variety of issues to include racial justice. Last year he gave $200,000 each to both the Black Lives Matter Global Network and the Colin Kaepernick Know Your Rights Legal Defense Camp. A half million went to Scarborough Health Network in his native country of Canada, another half million to the Recording Academy’s philanthropic arm and in April of 2020 he gave $1 million to hunger relief in his parents’ home of Ethiopia.
