Tyler Perry appeared on Audible’s Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast where the billionaire discussed challenges he’s experienced as a parent to his son Aman. He shared a situation of where the 8 year old he shares with his ex Gelila Bekele refused to brush his teeth while left in the care of their nanny. He told the former First Lady, “I walk in the room and we have a nanny who was helping us out and [Aman’s] just giving them business, he didn’t want to brush his teeth. He’s about 5 or 6 then and didn’t want to brush his teeth. He didn’t know I was in the door, I watched him for a minute, and then I had the nanny leave and I got down eye-to-eye and talked to him.”
He says he told Aman, “I said, ‘Listen to me, you are not going to be this way. We love you. We are your parents. You will not behave this way. We taught you better than this. You are a better kid than this. You’re going to be a better man than this.’ And I’m talking to him. I started to get emotional in the moment and I had to leave the room.” Aman went on to get emotional saying the episode caused him to be introspective about his own childhood and that he never had anyone speak to him the way that he did.
“I went out on the balcony I was in tears because I realized that nobody had ever talked, got down and talked to me eye-to-eye and had a conversation with me that I could understand. There was just yelling and cussing and what you’re not and what you’re never going to be. So to have a moment where I had a chance to have a conversation with a child, who is my spitting image, I was not only correcting and leading him the right way but helping my own little boy inside of me heal, it was a beautiful moment.”
In other Tyler Perry news, comedian Monique is back n track careerwise with her Netflix special My Name is Monique, out this April, her role in the new film The Reading and her recent casting by Lee Daniels in his new project The Deliverance, but she is, however not quite feeling Tyler Perry and Oprah. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she says she’s still waiting for a public apology from the two. She spoke about Oprah inviting her entire family on her show during a 2010 interview when she had only given her permission to speak to her brother Gerald, who sexually assaulted her as a child. And it all came from her refusal to go on a promotional tour of Precious, the 2009 drama she won numberous awards for. Regarding the 2010 Oprah interview, she says “I see the show, and I can tell that my mother is trying to make a dollar. I know my family. I reached out to everybody I could to try to get to Oprah. No. Nothing. It just went dead.” The Hollywood Reporter said she “still demands and expects public apologies from Winfrey and Perry.” If she could make up with Daniels after all these years, anything can happen. Here’s to hoping she gets the closure and respect out of this situation she’s been looking for.
