We’re two days away from the Olympics beginning and we already have had a series of boycotts with another on the way. The US Women’s Gymnastics team will not be staying within the Olympic Village and the reason is because of a positive COVID test. Head coach Cecile Landi made the decision after Kara Eaker tested positive on Sunday. So the team is going to a nearby hotel to mitigate any spread. And the good part about this is that they get to sleep in actual beds and not those cardboard things the Olympic Village gave the athletes.
“We know it isn’t ideal for the Olympic experience but nothing is ideal during a pandemic,” Landi wrote on Twitter. “We feel like we can control the athletes and our safety better in a hotel setting!”
Eaker’s father Mark has said she’s “picked herself up off the floor and started looking forward to getting off to college.” He went on to say, “So they thought it was a false positive. And then the next day, they did another saliva test, and it came back positive. And then later on they did a nose swab, and that one came back positive. So two positives, and you’re done pretty much.” He did say that their entire family “tested here at home, negative as well. So it’s kind of a mystery as to how she wound up catching it.”
